The mineralization of CO2
CO2 mineralization or mineral carbonation (MC) is one of the proposed ways to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions. It is currently the only way to store CO2 in a stable and inert manner. MC is adapted to the treatment of concentrated gases but can also be used directly with flue gases or other industrial gaseous streams more or less concentrated in CO2 and even ambient air. Also, carbonation can be applied to a wide range of feedstocks such as industrial alkaline or mining residues. Beyond sequestration, MC is now seen as a utilization approach, as it generates useful materials in the construction industry, for example.
The presentation will be an introduction to MC by presenting the different works carried out in the last 15 years and will focus on the ECO2 Magnesia technology, developed in the INRS laboratories.
